DHS's Derichsweiler is State-bound in Biology

Denison High School senior Mathew Derichsweiler will compete at the prestigious UIL Academic State Competition in Austin on May 22nd, in one of UIL's toughest subjects: Biology.
"My interest and success in Advanced Placement Biology during my sophomore year persuaded me to sign up for the UIL Science Team at the beginning of my junior year," said Derichsweiler. "During my junior year, I received a second place medal in Biology at the Regional Competition, but it didn't qualify me to compete at the State level. This year, I received the top score in Biology at Regionals, which was what I needed to qualify for State."
Derichsweiler first entered UIL Academic Competition as a freshman in the field of Social Studies, with encouragement from his World Geography teacher who also happened to be the team's coach. He competed at the Regional Contest in Social Studies three times, placing third as a freshman, second his junior year, and first this year in annual District competition. He also was a member of the Regional Social Studies Team, which also placed first this year at the UIL District competition.
