Talented B. Mac students earn top awards

Theatre students at B. McDaniel Middle School wowed audiences and judges at performances and contests throughout the year, an important part of the big picture of excellence in fine arts on campuses across Denison ISD. Fine Arts Chair Amy Jordan says skilled training at lower grade levels facilitates top state and national honors at the high school level. B. Mac’s Theatre Arts teacher Rosanna Pilcher agrees, noting that many of her star students got their start at the elementary level through the district’s “Starlit Kids” program.
“I am so proud of our kids, in particular their accomplishments at the 2013 UIL One Act Play contest,” said Pilcher. “Shila Hamilton was named to the All-Star Cast, Derek Logan earned Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Sara Shumaker was named All-Star Technician for their roles in The Witch’s Lullaby. This year’s “Holiday Rock! Talent Show” was an amazing success as well, with first place honors going to Moises Mandujano and Trevon Norman in a dub-step dance routine, second place to Michael Heglund for a juggling act and third place to Jaydan Hunt, David Sauceda and Payton Armstrong for singing and playing guitar.”
Pilcher says this year’s performers are serious about theatre. “I very much expect to see these talented students continue to excel onstage at DHS—several former students are in this year’s state-bound one act play—as well as in college and their careers. The Denison Performing Arts and Parent-Teacher Organization have been instrumental in supporting the middle school program with financial help.”
Jordan agrees. “Our Denison community is so supportive of our Fine Arts programs. The Braun and Smith Foundations in particular, as well as Munson and Regensburger, have all been heavily involved over the past decade with financial support as well as their presence at many of our schools’ productions. They’re just awesome, and we’re all so very appreciative of their support. Our success would be limited without them.”
