Dear Parent We would like to welcome you to Layne. Parents, as well as children, are a big part of our program. Our principal is Mrs. Brawley, our secretary is Mrs. Parker, our school counselor is Mrs. Cole, and our school nurse is Mrs. Trotter. Kindergarten is a very important year for children. They will grow socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. The curriculum includes reading readiness, math readiness, science, social studies, music, art, and physical education. Kindergarten is the year your children develop attitudes and skills they need for future learning. They will be learning how to work and play with others, too. You can help: You can best help your child to have a good first year by seeing that your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast. When you help your child with his/her name, use one (capital) upper case and the rest (small) lower case letters. For example, John Doe. Always go over papers brought home as extra reinforcement. . Attendance: Attendance in Kindergarten is very important. Please make sure your child is at school every day possible. If your child is absent, please send a note telling the reason for their absence, teacher’s name/grade, date of absence, and the child’s full name upon their return to school. Arrival / Dismissal: If your child wishes to have breakfast in the classroom, he/she should arrive at school by 8:00. Otherwise we encourage your child to be here by 8:15 for announcements and morning procedures. Students arriving after 8:30 will need to come to the office for a tardy slip. Dismissal for all students is 3:30. Lunches: If your child plans to eat on a tray from the cafeteria, we encourage you to set up an account with the cafeteria. You may put money into their account by cash or check. They will notify you by sending a letter with your child when the account is running low or empty. When sending money, please send it in an envelope with your child’s name, teacher’s name, amount, and what it is to be used for here at school. Children who bring their lunch may buy milk for $.50. Please try to send correct change. Milk money should stay in the lunch box until the child is ready to buy milk. You are always welcome to eat lunch with your child, but please call the cafeteria (903-462-7524) and let them know so they may plan for extras. You may also call the cafeteria if you have any questions about your child’s account. Please do not send carbonated drinks in a lunch box thermos as they often leak. Lunchroom Prices: Milk .50….student lunch $1.65….5-day plan is $8.25….10-day plan $16.50….adult lunch $2.50….. (If prices do not change) Kindergarten School Supply List:

Conference Times: Please schedule conferences through the office. Due to our teaching schedule, we are unable to conference during the day except at a specified conference period time. We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year! If you ever have any questions, please discuss them with us. A conference can be scheduled any day by calling the Layne office, 462-7450. Encourage your child to feel good about themselves, and to be proud of what they are doing. Working together, we can make this a very rewarding and educational year for your child. We look forward to a great kindergarten year for your child here at Layne Elementary. Sincerely, Mrs. Tammy Thomas Mrs. Debbie Harrison Layne Kindergarten Teachers
We’ll see you soon! Is your child ready for kindergarten?
In general, most children entering kindergarten should be able to: · Say and write their full name · Use a restroom without help, using buttons and zippers · Follow spoken directions and obey rules · Use words to express feelings · Take turns and get along with others · Use crayons and scissors and be able to cut · Tie shoes · Know colors · Trace, outline, and color inside the lines
What can you do as a parent? Help your child to be prepared for school by showing your pride and excitement! Contact your school to find out what the first day will be like and talk with your child about it. Walk or drive by the school often. Point it out to your child. Visit the school together to take a tour. Talk about the fun things your child will do in school, such as making arts and crafts, singing and playing. Make a routine for the school year. Set a bedtime and limit TV watching. Plan time each day to talk about what happened in school. Let your child help choose what to wear on the first day. Clothes should be sturdy and comfortable—not too fancy.
