1. REVISED 7-29-20

The conditions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are continually evolving, and Denison Independent School District’s Safe Return to School Plan will be constantly evaluated to adapt to the continuing trends of the COVID-19 virus, especially in Denison and Grayson County.

a)being directly exposed to infectious secretions (e.g., being coughed on); or

b) being within 6 feet for a largely uninterrupted or sustained extended contact period throughout the course of a day of approximately 15 minutes; however, additional factors like case/contact masking (i.e., both the infectious individual and the potential close contact have been consistently and properly masked), ventilation, presence of dividers, and case symptomology may affect this determination.

In addition to the Denison ISD Safe Return to School Plan, Terrell Elementary School will adhere to the following procedures and policies:

School Day

  • Terrell Elementary School will now begin at 8:15am and end at 3:15pm. Students will be tardy after 8:15.

    • We ask each family to please screen your child at home for fever or other signs of illness (see the DISD plan) each morning, and do not send them if they are ill.

  • Dismissal will begin promptly at 3:15.

Visitor Procedures:

  • Only essential visitors will be allowed onto Denison ISD campuses; essential visitors will be determined by Campus Administrators. (DISD staff, parent attending a meeting, etc.)

    • To limit exposure, visitors will not be allowed in the building during morning drop off, including the first day of school.  (See DISD plan for PreK and kindergarten first day of school procedures.)

    • To limit exposure, visitors will not be allowed during lunch.

  • If you need to drop off something for your student, check your student in late, or pick-up your student early, you may do so by speaking with Mrs. Guerrero in the foyer through the drop-off area in the glass.  All visitors will still need to scan into the Lobby Guard system per our usual requirements.

  • All visitors will be asked screening questions (through Lobby Guard) and will have their temperature checked prior to being released into the building.

Social Distancing Practices

  • Denison ISD and Terrell Elementary will encourage individuals to practice social distancing.

  • To the greatest extent possible, desks will be arranged to allow for social distancing.

  • In classrooms where students are regularly within six feet of one another, teachers will plan for more frequent hand sanitizing.

Masks/Face Coverings

  • In compliance with the Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-29, all Denison ISD employees will wear face coverings.

  • Students in grades 4-12 will be required to wear a face covering per Governor Abbott’s order.

  • Denison ISD and Terrell Elementary will also require grades 1-3 to wear a face covering.  Pre K and Kinder may also wear one if the family would prefer it.

    • Should there be an existing condition that would meet an allowable exception to wearing the mask, please contact the principal, Mrs. Neidert, and the nurse, Mrs. Bryant.  This will be handled on a student-to-student basis.

  • 1 DISD face covering will be provided for all staff and students.  But, students may wear one from home if you so choose.

  • We ask that each child take care of the face covering, come to school with it each day, and wash it as needed.  We will have disposable masks available should a student forget to bring one.

  • The face covering may be a mask, gaiter, or a face shield, but it must cover the mouth and nose.

Access to the Nurse

  • All students will have access to the nurse when needed.  We will social distance the students who are waiting to see the nurse.

  • Should we have a suspected COVID case, there will be quarantining measures in place to keep this student separated from the general school population until they are picked up by the parent/guardian.

  • The nurse will be called immediately should a suspected COVID or other medical emergency arise.

  • Please see the DISD Safe Return to School Plan for protocols should a positive case be identified on our campus.

Entry, Exit, Transition, Breakfast, and Lunch Procedures

  • ALL teaching staff will report by 7:45 to assist with social distanced supervision.

  • 7:30-8:00 all students enter the north door

    • Grades 2, 3, 4 in cafeteria

  • Students arriving after 7:45 will go straight to classrooms either from entry at north door or front door, depending on time.

  • Arrivals after 8:00am will be at the front door, and students will move straight to classrooms for breakfast.

  • Breakfast is free for all students.

  • There is one entry door and one exit door.

  • Only one grade level will be in the cafeteria for a lunch period (with the exception of PreK and 2nd grades).

  • Students will have access to grab-and-go lunches with pre-packaged food items.  Cafeteria staff will distribute lunches.  Students will not go through the food-serving line.

  • Students will wash hands before eating.

  • Each student will have his/her own locker for storing materials.

  • Hand sanitizer is available in every room.  Students will sanitize entering and exiting the room.

  • Bathroom/handwashing breaks will be planned at least 2x a day and before lunch.  Staff will monitor the handwashing.

  • The water fountains will be turned off, but we will have water bottle fillers.  Students may bring their own water bottle and may store it in their locker to prevent contact when not in use.

  • Recess will be scheduled by grade level to keep grade levels separate.  The schedule will be posted on the shared drive for staff to consult.  We will also limit the number of students on each playground piece.  No masks are needed at recess if plans are in place to limit numbers of students congregating on equipment.

  • Classrooms will be social distanced where possible.

  • Rotations (PE, LRC, and computer lab) will continue per our usual grade level schedule with social distancing, masks, and sanitizing.

    • LRC will hold returned books for 2 days before re-shelving in addition to other measures to sanitize materials as students browse and work in the LRC.

    • PE will have activities that are social distanced and will go outside when weather allows.  No masks are required in PE if social distanced and/or outside.

    • We will have dividers between computers in the computer lab, and all computer equipment will be sanitized between classes.  Students will use the same computer each time they visit the computer lab.

  • Students will have their own set of supplies (crayons, pencil, scissors, etc.) to use in all class areas, including headphones.  We ask that you please send a pair of ear buds for your student’s use.

  • Materials for centers and any shared resources should be:  in baggies for each student OR easy to sanitize.  Students will use the same computer/iPad each day in the classroom.  All shared materials will be sanitized after use.

  • When working with students in small groups, teachers will use dividers and masks.

  •  4th grade will continue to change classes, but the desk/tables and materials will be sanitized between groups.

  • Each classroom teacher will determine the best methods for communicating with parents.  Google Classroom will be used by all classrooms teachers, and Class DOJO, Remind, Facebook, etc. may be used.  And while some teachers may choose to continue with paper behavior charts and take-home folders and paper homework, some teachers may communicate only through electronic means as often as possible.  This will limit the amount of paperwork coming and going from school.

  •  All office communications to families will come through Google Classroom and our Terrell Facebook page.  Again, this will limit the amount of paperwork coming and going from school.

  •  There will be extra help with sanitizing during the day.

  • “Meet the Teacher” for grades K through 4th will be virtual.  These will be held at various times by grade levels Aug. 10, 11, or 12th and will be held via Google Meet.  You will receive this information from your child’s teacher.

    • If you cannot attend the Virtual Meet the Teacher, each teacher and the principal will post informational videos on our Terrell website.

  • School Supply Drop-Off for Grades 1-4 only

    • Monday, August 10 @ 2-6pm

    • Only 1 adult per family may enter the cafeteria

    • Enter the cafeteria through the courtyard, and place supplies on classroom teacher’s table.  Make sure your student’s name is clearly marked.

    • Masks will be required to enter.  Please use social distancing while in the building.

    • Only 10 people will be allowed in the cafeteria at one time.

PreK and Kindergarten—you will be receiving information about your specific day and plan for supplies from your child’s teacher based on phasing-in strategy in the DISD plan.
