Notice calling for the 2025 Election of Region 10 Board Members

Denison ISD School Board members are elected to serve three-year terms, representing the various wards throughout the Denison Independent School District. To be eligible, a candidate must reside in the ward that they running to represent.

Board elections are held in early May, with filing dates beginning in mid-January and extending through a mid-February deadline. Persons interested in running for election to the Denison ISD School Board should contact the Denison ISD Business office at 903-462-7042 for additional information.

Denison ISD School Board Election Information

Denison ISD Board of Trustee Elections are conducted in May of each year in accordance with the Texas Secretary of State Uniform General Election Date.

Candidates interested in filing an application for a place on the ballot can file their application the 30th day before the filing deadline. The filing deadline for a general election is 5:00pm on the 78th day before the election day. The deadline to file a declaration of write-in candidacy is

5:00pm on the 74th day before the election. See the deadlines for the 2025 General Election below.

 

General Information

The Denison ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven board members elected to serve, without compensation, for overlapping terms of three years each. Elections are conducted annually in May.  While candidates run for specific places, they do not represent specific geographical areas; rather, each represents Denison ISD at large.

Elections of Trustees are held annually for three-year terms (cycles identified below):

  • Place 1 and 2 - 2024, 2027, 2030 and in three-year intervals thereafter.

  • Places 3, 4 and 5 - 2022, 2025, 2028 and in three-year intervals thereafter.

  • Places 6 and 7 - 2023, 2026, 2029 and in three-year intervals thereafter.

 

Terms for the Board of Trustees expire as follows:

  • Places 1 and 2 - May 2027

  • Places 3, 4, and 5 - May 2025

  • Places 6 and 7 - May 2026

Following the annual election, the Board elects a president, vice-president, and secretary to serve one-year terms.

 

Deadlines for the May 3, 2025 Trustee Election:

  • Four board positions will be up for the May 3, 2025 election.

  • Notice of Deadline to File Application for Place on the May 3, 2025 Ballot

  • First Day to File for Place on the Ballot is January 15, 2025

  • Last Day to File for Place on the Ballot is February 14, 2025 by 5:00 pm

An application for a place on the ballot must be completed in writing; signed, sworn to by the candidate before a person authorized to administer an oath, and dated; timely filed at:

Candidate Information

The Board of Trustees consist of seven board members elected to serve, without compensation, for overlapping terms of three years each.  Elections are conducted annually in May.

All school board positions represent the entire school district. All Denison ISD residents who meet the eligibility requirements specified in Board Policy BBA (Legal) may run for a position in the Board of Trustee election. Following the annual election, the Board elects a president, vice-president, and secretary to serve one-year terms.

Denison ISD Board of Trustees Candidate Requirements

Form, Content, and Procedure:

An application for a place on the ballot must be in writing; signed, sworn to by the candidate before a person authorized to administer an oath, and dated; timely filed with the district's filing authority (often the superintendent's secretary or another designated district employee); and contain specified information about the candidate:

  • The candidate’s name, date of birth, and occupation;

  • The candidate’s residence address or the address at which the candidate receives mail with a description of the location of the candidate’s residence;

  • The candidate’s length of continuous residence in Texas and in the district as of the date the candidate swears to the application;

  • If available, a public mailing address and email address at which the candidate receives correspondence relating to the candidate’s campaign;

  • The office sought, including any place or other distinguishing number and an indication of whether the office sought is for a full or unexpired term;

  • Statements that the candidate is a U.S. citizen; has not been determined by a court to be mentally incapacitated; has not been convicted of a felony; is aware of the nepotism law; and swears an oath to support and defend the U.S. and Texas Constitutions and laws.

 

Denison ISD Board of Trustees Eligibility

An individual is eligible to be a candidate for, or elected or appointed to, a Texas school board if the individual:

  • Is a United States citizen;

  • Is 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable;

  • Has not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote;

  • Has not been convicted of a felony;

  • Has resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the territory from which the office is elected for six months immediately preceding the following date:

  • For an independent candidate, the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate’s application for a place on the ballot;

  • For a write-in candidate, the date of the election at which the candidate’s name is written in; or

  • For an appointee to an office, the date the appointment is made;

  • Is registered to vote in the territory from which the office is elected on the date described above; and

  • Satisfies any other eligibility requirements prescribed by law for the office.

 

Qualified Voter

A person may not be elected trustee of an independent school district unless the person is a qualified voter.  "Qualified voter" means a person who:

  • Is 18 years of age or older;

  • Is a United States citizen;

  • Has not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote;

  • Has not been finally convicted of a felony;

  • Is a resident of the state; and

  • Is a register voter.

Denison ISD Board of Trustees Responsibilities of Leadership

The Denison Independent School District is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees that is responsible for adopting policy, employing and evaluating the superintendent, approving the budget and capital improvement plans, and setting the tax rate. As the district’s elected leaders, Trustees are charged with making decisions they believe to be in the best interests of all Denison ISD staff and children.

 

Denison ISD Board of Trustees Service

There are seven members of the Denison ISD Board of Trustees, each elected to serve staggered three-year terms. Officers are elected by the members of the Board of Trustees. Trustees provide public service to the Denison community without financial compensation. Candidates to the Board of Trustees must conform to the eligibility requirements of the Texas Election Code.
