District of Innovation Plan

DISD became a District of Innovation in 2016 exempting the District from the uniform school start date. The exemption was approved for a five-year period, after which to renew the plan the District must repeat the adoption process to extend for an additional five-year period.

The purpose of the exemption was to allow flexibility to consider starting school earlier in August, and end the school year prior to Memorial Day in May.
It would also allow for completing the first semester prior to the Christmas Holiday break.
The exemption is granted for five years, after which to renew the exemption Districts are required to repeat the adoption process outlined in meeting a District of Innovation.

At the April 19, 2022 Denison ISD Board of Trustees meeting, the Board approved the District of Innovation Plan to exempt the district from the uniform school start date.
