Immunization guidelines for DISD students

According to Denison ISD officials, required immunizations for school children must be current before the start of school on August 22th.

Donna Grubbs, Denison ISD Head Nurse, emphasized the importance of current immunizations for school children, saying the district’s goal is to keep all children as safe and healthy as possible.

“All students must be current with their immunizations before school starts, and requirements often change from year to year. The Grayson County Health Department offices in Sherman and Denison are currently conducting immunization clinics, and they have also scheduled special back-to-school clinics to allow families more options for scheduling and completing all necessary immunizations prior to the start of school. We’re urging parents to look closely at their children’s shot records and get any needed immunizations as soon as possible.”

Immunizations requirements

  • Hepatitis A vaccine All students entering kindergarten must have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.

  • Hepatitis B shots three doses required.

  • Polio four doses required with one dose on or after the child’s 4th birthday.

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine All students entering kindergarten must have two doses of MMR vaccine.

  • Varicella vaccine Students in the following grade levels must receive the following Varicella vaccinations:  K-12th: two doses. A written statement from a parent or legal guardian, school nurse or physician certifying a child’s positive history of varicella (chickenpox) or of varicella immunity will be accepted in lieu of the dose(s) of varicella vaccine. Special note: a child will not be considered delinquent in this series until 18 months have elapsed since receiving the first dose of Varicella vaccine.

  • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine (Tdap) All students entering seventh grade are required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine, or a booster dose of Tdap if it has been five years since their last dose of tetanus vaccine. A Tdap booster shot is required for all students in grades 7 through 12th.

  • Meningococcal vaccine All students entering 7th through 12th grades are required to have one dose of this vaccine.
