SMS students honor local Veterans

On Monday, Veterans Day 2019, Scott Middle School students and staff rolled out the red carpet to honor, salute and thank dozens of local veterans, soldiers and heroes who have sacrificed so much over the past 75 years to protect and preserve America’s many precious freedoms.

The pride and emotion were clearly visible as the veterans and students shared a special Scott’s Scholars Breakfast, timeless stories and an emotional patriotic program: hands offering salutes as crisp and sharp as they were many years ago; alert eyes, some with tears, riveted on Old Glory for the National Anthem; sentimental smiles as the SMS Band and Choir performed moving renditions of God Bless America, Battle Hymn of the Republic, America the Beautiful and other time-honored war hymns.

Midway through the ceremony, the veterans gave a detailed account of how and why they served, and what freedom means to each of them personally. All eyes were on the soldiers as the students listened carefully – in a packed auditorium where you could hear a pin drop.

“I think this is truly one of the most meaningful and educationally relevant events of our entire school year,” said SMS Principal John Parker. “Our kids learn about D-Day and Pearl Harbor, Korea and Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan and other wars from history books and online research…but these men and women relate first-hand what these wars and conflicts were all about, what it was like to be there. They lived to tell their stories and show our kids what freedom means…and what freedom costs. We owe these people a huge debt of gratitude that we can never repay. They were willing to make the ultimate sacrifices for America’s freedom. There’s no greater gift. It is a privilege to be able to thank and honor them.”
