CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
Denison ISD Pre AP & AP Program
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES
Advanced Placement (AP) is a rigorous academic program designed to prepare students for college success. The AP Program enables students to take college-level courses and exams, and to earn college credit or placement while still in high school.
The purpose of Pre-AP is to equip middle and high school students with the skills, tools, and habits needed to ensure success in AP courses and higher education endeavors. The Pre-AP program is based on two premises. The first is the expectation that all students can perform at rigorous academic levels. This expectation is reflected in curriculum and instruction throughout the school. Students are being challenged to expand their knowledge and skills to the next level.
The second is the belief that we can prepare every student for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible. The middle and high school years can provide a powerful opportunity to help all students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning.
The Texas Education Agency and the Texas College and Career Readiness Board have set higher standards for students to insure success in college and the work place. With over 1000 students enrolled in Pre-AP or AP courses in Denison ISD, we are preparing students for the rigorous academic expectations of the College Board Exams and future success in college courses and the field of work.
Denison High School has been ranked in the Top 10% of the best high schools in the nation annually, as designated by Newsweek Magazine’s prestigious annual list of the “Best Public High Schools in the United States.” The ranking is based on Advanced Placement tests, S.A.T. and A.C.T. exams, and overall student performance.
