DISD kicks off new school year with kindness, compassion

Thousands of Denison ISD students and staff kicked off the 2019-2020 school year with actions and words that emphasize kindness, compassion, civility and respect: a giant sign in a Mayes classroom that reads “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours;” a black and gold banner at Scott Middle School that simply says “Kindness Matters;” a sign at Terrell proclaiming “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching;” a Houston teacher’s shirt with a big bee front-center, challenging students to “Bee AMAZING!” Handprints and hearts made by Lamar first graders, pledging love and kindness to family and friends.

“I think the start of every school year is exciting because of the endless possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead for our students,” said Dr. Henry Scott, DISD Superintendent. “This 2019-2020 school year is certainly no exception…and may actually be one of our best years ever…not just because of what we accomplish academically, but what we accomplish as people. Our teachers and students win many awards every year, but I am most proud of who they are, what they value, and the way they conduct themselves and treat others. We very much need kindness, compassion, tolerance and civility in our world today, and our Denison students and staff are doing their part to make that happen every single day. We’re looking forward to a really great school year!”

Lamar first graders enjoyed a special reading of “The Kissing Hand” on the first day of school, followed by a creative promise of love and kindness for family and friends.

Big smiles and happy hugs were the order of the day as Denison ISD students returned to school for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
