Marching Towards Success: Two DHS Students to Participate in World-Class Drum Corps This Summer

This weekend, two sophomore DHS students flew to Indianapolis, Indiana for an educational camp with the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps. David Ariza and Axton Grams were both offered contracts to march with the world-class performing ensemble this summer.

“For those who are not familiar with drum corps, I compare it to the NFL of marching band” said Melissa Lewis, Director of Bands and Instrumental Music Coordinator for Denison ISD. “David and Axton auditioned with students from all over the country and even the world to earn one of only 156 spots in the Madison Scouts.”

Although not the first graduates from Denison ISD to participate in drum corps, Ariza and Grams are the first current high school students to do so. Following the end of the school year, the two young men will travel to Wisconsin to prepare a competitive marching band show, before beginning a nation-wide tour that will span the entire summer.

“David and Axton are two wonderful examples of the hard work and talent present in the Touch of Gold Band. I am so excited for them to have this opportunity to see the country and perform at the highest level! I know that they will represent Denison ISD with pride.”
